Multi-talented--Painter,image maker, curator, musician -- Rich Jacobs had an opening here last weekend.
Many of the original gallery goers and artists came on by to hang with Rich and trip on his art-- Tim Kerr,Tobin Yelland,Chris Johanson,Gary Davis and Aya Muto to name a few.
Rich has been developing his own style of abstraciton for many years. Rich is showing also his signature figuration.
The show was a total crowd pleaser and shows a sincere artist's
developed vision at it's finest.

November's 15 Minutes speaker is Marsea Goldberg. Marsea is founder and director of LA's New Image Art. She started the gallery in 1994 in her West Hollywood 10x10 design studio. Since then, the gallery has grown to attract a global cult following, grabbing the interest of art lovers and collectors worldwide. Renowned for her discriminating eye and solid curatorial skills, New Image Art Gallery continues to show the works of established and emerging artists coming out of the street, skate, fine art, and surf scenes. Over the years, the gallery has launched or mobilized the careers of Shepard Fairey, Ed Templeton, Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Rich Jacobs, Rebecca Westcott, Neckface, Cleon Peterson, Faile, Tauba Auerbach, Matt Leines, the Date Farmers, Judith Supine, and Bäst just to name a few.
This past year Marsea joined a lecture panel on the topic of Street Art at the MOCA and just recently her gallery was rated the best booth at LA Art Platform 2011 by the Huffington Post.

"15 minutes with . . . ." invites a person of interest from the arts community to spend 15 minutes, within the two hour time we have, to talk about themselves, their work, or anything else they might care to expound on. No formal question period will occur during the presentation so that we can continue the main purpose of the evening, which is to socialize. And of course those who wish may engage with the speaker afterward. We welcome your feedback and any suggestions you have as to speakers you would like to see invited. As usual good food, drinks, and especially interesting people will be there.

Location: At the point of Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive, two blocks east of San Vicente. I suggest avoiding traffic on Sunset Boulevard and approach from Holloway or Palm Drive - or go north on San Vicente and turn right two blocks.

Parking: Meters on Sunset, Holloway and in the City parking lot across the street, on the north side of Sunset next to the Coffee Bean.

Purpose: socializing, networking, hanging out, meeting the arts community in West Hollywood and Greater Los Angeles.

And remember that we are creating a safe environment for curators and gallerists to socialize and meet within the community. No pitching or portfolio sharing allowed.

The giant Art Platform fair took Los Angeles by storm at the beginning of October. With almost a hundred galleries and exhibition spaces from around the world participating, this was a high water mark in L.A.'s ascendancy on the international art world. There was no shortage of space for exhibitors at the giant LA Mart, the venerable Downtown design emporium known for the forty-foot chair -the world's largest - in its parking lot (and trivia buffs will remind you that the chair is about where first base was when the Los Angeles Angels played their home games at the then Washington Park from 1911 thru 1925).

The fair was primarily on two floors of the LA Mart building but all of the Los Angeles art world was sent into overdrive with the vote of confidence in the sustainability of a thriving art scene here that this fair represents.

Whether it was the champagne VIP preview or Saturday afternoon at $25 admission, it was crowded at all times. With accolades pouring down, the Pacific Standard Time theme of the show inspired many dealers to dust off the old Ruscha prints in the attic and hawk their wares, but enough gallerists were committed to the long-haul to showcase their artists in a serious setting despite the slew of commerce on all sides. Here are ten that still resonate...

RETNA at New Image Art

Just as Street Art is becoming as relevant as Disco (the dreaded "Senior Citizens take up Street Art" articles have arrived), New Image Art's Marsea Goldbergtakes it to another level with the best looking booth in the fair and one of the few dedicated to one artist. RETNA needs little introduction to Los Angeles collectors and hipsters alike, but the prominence of being the only artist at one gallery's booth allowed for the slew of nationally known collectors and curators to see that RETNA was a great painter and then to consider that he was the class of the Street Art genre.

Neck Face Invades Fairfax Alley

I am not sure what was in the cooler on the ground behind the Fallafel Place on Fairfax but I do know
it was strong, tasty, yellow and on ice. Rumor had it -- it was filled with Margaritas...

Last night Neck Face's genius video debuted under a full moon and black sky.
It was a totally special eve for the locals- being the freeway was shut down...

Practically magical.

Neck Face's film is hysterical I mean really really hysterical.
Funnier than The Hang Over 2 on half the budget and staring Neck who is funnier than
well almost anyone....

The film will be on the internet and I am sure will create a huge sensation.....

These wonderfully chaotic and tactile surf collages are the work of Owen Schmit. If you weren't familiar with the artist it might seem as though they were made in a grungy van by a sunburned acid casualty surf legend, but they weren't. They were made by a talented young lady from southern california who isn't much of a surfer, but the finds inspiration in this extreme sport. She has an art show with Paul Wackers opening July 30. Go see it. I don't know if she boogey boards or gets gnar on the aggressive in-lines, so you'll have to find out for yourself.

In the spirit of Swoon... comes Dithyrambalina.

Collaborative culture, collective intention and a regenerative resolve underlies Swoons latest imaginative endeavor - Musical Architecture in New Orleans.
Together with local and national sound artists and musicians, Swoon is realizing a larger than life music-box landmark for permanent public installation.

Instruments are in development that are to be built into the walls and the floorboards, so that visitors can make music by interacting with the space, and in the space together. Block party orchestrations are surely performances the community can look forward to upon actualization of this sculpture..

Swoon has designed the structure, giving the salvaged remains of an old Creole Cottage that once stood on the site another chance to thrill the residents of the Bywater neighbourhood.

The logistics involved with the development of ideas like singing walls, a floorboard operated organ and heartbeat sensitive percussion - offer all of us the opportunity to support a dream so visionary. The kinetic sound artists on the job need time and money to get all the mechanisms perfectly planned before final erection.

Last night Nina and I drove out to Pasadena to visit the Graduate Studios of Art Center College of Design. We forgot out cameras so here are some foggy cell photos of our visit with artist

This weekend - Kenny Scharf, Retna & Shepard Fairey are spawning a new mural at the West Hollywood Public Library (across the way from the MOCA Pacific Design Center).
The venture undertaken by this alliance is being endorsed and sponsored by MOCA and Cadillac respectively and is to be photographed by David Lachapelle.

Jeffrey Deitch hooked it up again.

Retna's Show Opens Wednesday Night In London

An exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artist RETNA will be presented by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida at the Old Dairy, London, from 8 June until 27 June 2011.

The Hallelujah World Tour will represent RETNA’s first solo UK exhibition and he will present 30 new works fusing a variety of different mediums including drawing, painting and poetry.

After a successful stop in Los Angeles last February, London is the second location to host "The Hallelujah World Tour", the show will then head to Hong Kong for a final representation.
